How I wrote a book in one week with ChatGPT

(and what you can learn from it)

Writing a book in one week might sound like a daunting task, but with the right approach, it becomes more achievable than you’d think. I recently wrote a business book for a client with my new VIP Ghostwriting service in just seven days, using my Reverse Writing methodology and ChatGPT. Along the way, I learned some valuable lessons that anyone can benefit from—even if you’re not writing a book.

Reverse Writing: Start from the end

My Reverse Writing method focuses on starting with the back cover, then creating an outline, and gradually filling it in. This approach ensures clarity and direction from the very beginning. By visualizing the end goal, I was able to guide the book-writing process step by step without getting overwhelmed. You can try this out yourself with my free Esther AI, trained in my method.

How ChatGPT helped in the process

I didn’t rely on ChatGPT to do all the writing; instead, I used it as a powerful tool that helped streamline the process.

  • Interview the client via Zoom: The first step was a Zoom interview with the client. I followed a structured format for these calls, recording everything for future reference.
  • Transcription and organization: I then transcribed these calls and used ChatGPT to organize the content into logical sections. With clear instructions, ChatGPT was able to help me structure the information into chapters and ideas.
  • Use ChatGPT like a team of writers: For each section, I gave ChatGPT targeted prompts. For example, I’d ask it to “Write a chapter including the examples given plus the theory mentioned by the client. use storytelling at the start and then step by step explain the theory, using case studies and examples mentioned by the client.” Breaking down the content into smaller chunks helped ChatGPT produce better-quality work.

How to avoid a generic book

Using AI in writing can sometimes result in generic or superficial content. Here’s how I made sure the book stayed authentic and unique:

  • Storytelling: I included the client’s personal stories and experiences, which added depth to the content. ChatGPT can help you refine these stories, but the heart of the story needs to come from real-life experiences.
  • Incorporate original content: I focused on the client’s unique ideas, theories, and examples. ChatGPT can create structure, but originality and uniqueness must come from you or your client.
  • Choose a tone of voice: You can teach ChatGPT your own tone of voice by customizing the app, or by feeding it your previous writings and have him analize them. For this particular book, the client and I settled on a practical, engaging, and conversational tone, inspired by the style of Timothy Ferriss. This tone became the anchor that kept the content consistent throughout the project.
  • Iterate and refine: I didn’t stop at the first draft. Every output from ChatGPT was treated as a draft, and I went through several rounds of refinement. Asking ChatGPT questions like, “How can I improve this chapter?” led to more thoughtful content.

Practical tips for writing a book in a week with ChatGPT

  • Use clear guidance: Be specific in your prompts. For instance, “Write an engaging introduction in the style of Timothy Ferriss,” will help ChatGPT generate content that matches the tone you’re aiming for.
  • Work with small sections: Instead of asking ChatGPT to write an entire chapter at once, break it down into manageable sections. This prevents it from becoming overwhelmed and ensures higher-quality results. For example, you can ask, “Write 200 words on the benefits of remote work for productivity.”
  • Maintain consistency in style: Repeatedly remind ChatGPT of your chosen style and tone with each prompt. If the style shifts, ask it to rephrase content to align with the tone of earlier sections, like the introduction.
  • Ask for refinements: Don’t settle for the first response. Ask ChatGPT to refine its own output with prompts like, “Simplify this explanation” or “Add an example to this paragraph.” Keep pushing for improvements until you’re satisfied.
  • Lead like a team of writers: Treat ChatGPT as a team of writers. Assign it tasks like summarizing sections, merging paragraphs, or reorganizing content. For example, you might say, “Combine these two sections into a cohesive argument.” Review and guide the tool just as you would a human assistant.
  • Check for repetitions: Ask ChatGPT to help spot repeated phrases or concepts. For example, “Are there any repeated phrases in this chapter?” This can save you time and improve the flow of your manuscript.
  • Keep ChatGPT focused: ChatGPT can get “lazy” and focus only on the last few chapters if you feed it an entire manuscript at once. Work with summaries or small sections to avoid this. For example, “Summarize key points from Chapters 1-3.”

Key pitfalls to avoid

While ChatGPT is a fantastic tool, there are some potential pitfalls you need to watch out for:

  • Laziness: As mentioned earlier, ChatGPT may prioritize recent content and neglect earlier sections. Break down your manuscript into smaller chunks for focused analysis and avoid feeding it too much at once.
  • Check for accuracy: Always double-check the content ChatGPT generates. In one case, I asked it to integrate client stories from a document I had uploaded, but it ended up fabricating stories rather than using the real ones. This is why you must review the output and be cautious when working with detailed information.
  • Be persistent: Don’t hesitate to ask for revisions multiple times. ChatGPT remains courteous and will continue to refine content as long as you give it clear, focused prompts.

Final thoughts: What you can learn

Writing a book in a week is an intense but rewarding process. With the right structure and tools, it’s entirely possible to produce a high-quality book in a short time frame. Whether you’re working on a book or another large project, here are the main takeaways:

  • Structure is key: Reverse Writing helps you stay organized and prevents content overload. Always refer back to your outline to ensure everything stays on track.
  • Leverage AI as a partner: Use ChatGPT as a tool to assist with drafting, organizing, and refining your content. Treat it as a team member that requires guidance and supervision.
  • Keep it personal: Original stories, ideas, and theories make your content unique. Use AI to polish, but make sure the heart of the content is authentically yours.
  • Iterate, iterate, iterate: Don’t settle for the first draft. Keep refining and improving your content until you’re satisfied with the results.

With these strategies, you’ll find that writing a book—or completing any large project—is more manageable and less overwhelming.

Happy writing!
