‘Fired’ from the Netherlands 🇳🇱

As one of the first digital nomads, I explored more than 100 countries. I shared my stories and insights through lectures, workshops and writing retreats all over the world. However, my wanderlust also had unforeseen consequences. Ten years after my knighthood, my passport renewal was refused because I ‘travelled too much.’ This ironic twist resulted in parliamentary questions, de-registration from the Netherlands and a new identity: I officially ceased to exist.

The paradox of my dismissal by the Netherlands became complete when the Dutch government (and other countries) later hired me to advise on ‘the problem’ of the mobile generation.

This shows how a ‘setback' can turn into your biggest opportunity! ✨

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

❤️ Can you remember the exact moment you fell in love? I do!

🎥 It was even caught on camera!

🇮🇹 This video captures the drive to the viewing of the olive orchard in Puglia, Southern Italy that I would buy a few days later. It was the first plot of land I visited and I already fell in love with it before I saw it.

💯 You can see my excitement rising as we get closer. No wonder I cancelled all other viewings after this first visit.

😍 It was Valentine's Day 2020 and it was truly love at first sight with my @tinytrullo.

🌎 LANG LEVE DIGITAL NOMADS! 🌏

Ze zijn overal, zelfs als je ze niet altijd ziet: de vrije geesten. Of het nu op een boot is, in een camper in het bos, een Airbnb of gewoon thuis.

Mensen met een open mindset en een ondernemende geest. Die altijd zoeken naar manieren hoe het anders of beter kan. Hoe ze minder kunnen werken, meer kunnen genieten of anderen kunnen helpen.

Herken jij jezelf hierin? Mijn belangrijkste tip aan jou: laat je niet afleiden door de 'naysayers' om je heen. Door mensen die hun angsten op jou projecteren. Zoek juist naar gelijkgestemden die het al doen, bijvoorbeeld in Facebookgroepen of op die plek waar jij zo graag naartoe wilt. Alles is mogelijk – the world is (y)our playground. Ja, zelfs nu, in deze tijd!

DO YOU SHOW WHERE YOU ARE?

If you work remotely or as a digital nomad, do you show your surroundings in Zoom calls with clients, employers, or colleagues?

I hear from many people that they prefer a neutral background and keep their location vague. Some even go as far as wearing a thick sweater when calling Dutch clients in winter, even if they’re actually in the tropics, just to blend in. I get it—there can be reasons for that.

But I believe there’s also a lot to be said for simply showing up as you are, including where you are.

In my writing coaching calls, I always show my surroundings, and my clients love it. Two weeks ago, I was in Buenos Aires, last week in Peru, and now I’m at Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. The background always sparks curiosity, joy, and even new insights that they can use in their books.

I’m curious—how do you handle this?

If you work from home, on location, or remotely, do you show where you are? Or do you go out of your way to appear as if you’re somewhere else?
