In 2015 I was the first digital nomad to have their own exhibition in a museum. Come to think of it, I may even be the only one, ever…😂

My story, photos and old passports were displayed at the emigration exhibition "I am leaving" in the beautiful Flehite museum in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. The idea was to show a day in the life of a digital nomad.

Many people got inspired about this new "category" in travel and emigration and I still can’t believe that this actually happened. 🙏

𝗩𝗢𝗢𝗥 𝗩𝗘𝗘𝗟 𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗡 𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗡𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗧𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗘, 𝗩𝗢𝗢𝗥 𝗠𝗜𝗝 𝗗𝗘 𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗠𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗭𝗢𝗡𝗘

Voor de meeste mensen is op een podium staan hun grootste angst. Maar voor mij voelt het als thuis. Ik heb 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝟭𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗸𝗲𝘆𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻, 𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲 𝗧𝗘𝗗𝘅-𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀, 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝟳𝟱𝟬 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀. Je mag me midden in de nacht wakker maken, in mijn pyjama op een podium zetten en me ter plekke een willekeurig onderwerp geven—ik kan er zo 1,5 uur boeiend over vertellen.

Met die ervaring dacht ik: een theatershow organiseren? Makkelijk! Gewoon op het podium staan en verhalen vertellen. Maar toen ontdekte ik de magie van theater: licht, geluid, een 180-graden videoscherm, een gigantisch podium waarop je niet stil hoeft te staan. Ineens zag ik eindeloze mogelijkheden: scènes spelen, gasten uitnodigen, dansen, zingen, interactie met het publiek.

En anders dan bij mijn keynotes, waar ik altijd rekening houd met een opdrachtgever, is 28 juni mijn avond. Mijn boodschap, mijn levenslessen, mijn legacy. Al anderhalf jaar verzamel ik ideeën: “Dit wil ik erin! Oh, en dat ook! Dit moeten mensen ervaren!”

THE PRICE OF FREEDOM

Travel, adventure, flexibility, no constraints, no responsibilities or commitments, meeting interesting people in exciting places; many people see only this superficial exterior of the wonderful free life I lead. But my life is not that one-dimensional.

Even people close to me—very close to me—don’t seem to have a complete picture of the real situation. Maybe that is my own fault; my mission and passion is to trigger people to get out of their comfort zones and to chase/live their dreams. It wouldn’t be so ‘sexy’ if I constantly addressed the less pleasant attributes of freedom. But I do think it is important to paint a complete picture.

So here we are: the other side of freedom; the price I—and many other nomads—pay for our wonderful lives…

🙅🏼‍♀️ Nobody to blame
🏡 No stability
💪🏼 You have to be a self starter
💶 No fixed income
❤️ Hard to ‘catch up’ with family and friends

And still, I travel.

28 juni komt nu wel héél snel dichterbij! Ik heb tango geoefend voor mijn theatershow, een ticket geboekt voor mijn leraar @adrianlunacoach om naar Amsterdam te komen, een prachtig knalroze pak gescoord in Buenos Aires en ben bezig met nog meer gave verrassingen. 💗

Maar het gaat niet altijd van een leien dakje...Het theater rekent ineens 21% btw over zaalhuur, techniek, en meer, wat een flinke financiële tegenvaller is. En omdat veel mensen tot nu toe liever wachtten met boeken, zijn er nog een paar honderd stoelen (ongeveer de helft van het theater) beschikbaar. Ik had van de week zelfs ineens een nachtmerrie dat het ineens de dag van de show was en ik nog niets had voorbereid… Dat gebeurt me anders nooit. 👀

Toch weet ik dat het goed komt. Mijn theatershow gaat immers over vertrouwen – en dit is voor mij ook weer zo’n les. Maar eerlijk? Het zou geweldig zijn als je nu alvast je kaartje koopt! 🎟

NO WONDER I’M TIRED…

I wondered why I was so exhausted, and then I looked at what I did in the past two and a half days:

• Arrived in Queens, New York late at night after a 6-hour flight delay, driving from Philadelphia because my plane couldn’t land due to bad weather ✈️🚗
• Visited a real estate project in Port Chester (2 hours away), which turned into 4+ hours of travel because I took the wrong train 🤪🏡🚆
• Had dinner with my brother 🍽️
• Did 4 book writing coaching sessions with clients in The Netherlands 📖✍️
• Prepared and rehearsed my theater show with my brother 🎭
• Completed 2 intense workouts with my personal trainer in Buenos Aires via Zoom 💪🏽🏋️‍♀️
• Visited the psychedelic Assembly in Manhattan, where my brother volunteers 🌿🌆
• Did a 1-hour panel interview on AI ethics 🤖🎤
• Met my brother’s friends and had lunch with his gallery owner 🖼️🍷
• Wrote 2 columns about AI for Dutch career platform Intermediair 📝
• Did a Zoom call with my theater show producer in the Netherlands 🎭💻
• Solved some problems for my dad in Miami 🏠📞
• Made another trip to Manhattan to walk around, enjoy the city, and have lunch 🏙️🥗
• Recorded videos and wrote posts for social media to share my inspiration 🎥📱

Oh, and did I mention it’s freezing here? ❄️🥶

Sometimes, life moves so fast that we don’t even realize how much we’re packing into each day. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of work, family, and new experiences, but even when it’s all amazing, it still takes energy.

A reminder to myself (and maybe to you, too): Even the best adventures require rest.

Just 5 more flights and three more countries in the coming 10 days… and then I’ll finally be in Puglia, Italy for a few weeks! 🇮🇹🌿

LIFE HAPPENS BETWEEN YOUR PLANS

I thought: a quick flight from Fort Lauderdale to New York to visit my brother. Delta sent an email: bad weather, free rebooking. But I smelled an overbooking trick and thought: No excuses, I’m flying anyway.

And sure enough, we took off right on time. But just before landing: New York closed due to weather. We circled until we were almost out of fuel. Plan B: Baltimore. But… Baltimore closed too. Plan C: With the last drops of fuel, we diverted to Philadelphia.

There I was. Luggage? Not with us. Train? Not an option. Stressed people all around. But instead of complaining, I started chatting with two fellow passengers. We decided to rent a car together.

Six hours later than planned I finally arrived in New York. Late? Yes. But I entered the city driving over the bridge, seeing a skyline I’d never experience from a plane window. And my new travel companions? One is from Port Chester, where I’m visiting a real estate project tomorrow. The other works on exactly the kind of real estate projects I’m interested in.

The moral?
Sometimes, the best opportunities come wrapped in delays. You can choose frustration or adventure.

No excuses. Stay open to the unexpected. That’s where real life happens.
