🌎 LANG LEVE DIGITAL NOMADS! 🌏

Ze zijn overal, zelfs als je ze niet altijd ziet: de vrije geesten. Of het nu op een boot is, in een camper in het bos, een Airbnb of gewoon thuis.

Mensen met een open mindset en een ondernemende geest. Die altijd zoeken naar manieren hoe het anders of beter kan. Hoe ze minder kunnen werken, meer kunnen genieten of anderen kunnen helpen.

Herken jij jezelf hierin? Mijn belangrijkste tip aan jou: laat je niet afleiden door de 'naysayers' om je heen. Door mensen die hun angsten op jou projecteren. Zoek juist naar gelijkgestemden die het al doen, bijvoorbeeld in Facebookgroepen of op die plek waar jij zo graag naartoe wilt. Alles is mogelijk – the world is (y)our playground. Ja, zelfs nu, in deze tijd!

DO YOU SHOW WHERE YOU ARE?

If you work remotely or as a digital nomad, do you show your surroundings in Zoom calls with clients, employers, or colleagues?

I hear from many people that they prefer a neutral background and keep their location vague. Some even go as far as wearing a thick sweater when calling Dutch clients in winter, even if they’re actually in the tropics, just to blend in. I get it—there can be reasons for that.

But I believe there’s also a lot to be said for simply showing up as you are, including where you are.

In my writing coaching calls, I always show my surroundings, and my clients love it. Two weeks ago, I was in Buenos Aires, last week in Peru, and now I’m at Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. The background always sparks curiosity, joy, and even new insights that they can use in their books.

I’m curious—how do you handle this?

If you work from home, on location, or remotely, do you show where you are? Or do you go out of your way to appear as if you’re somewhere else?

A WORLD TRAVELER WHO CAN’T FIND HER OWN DOOR

I arrived in Antigua, Guatemala, in the middle of the night—dropped off by a taxi at 4 AM. When I woke up, I had no idea where I was. But no worries, Google Maps would guide me.

A good friend of mine lives just two blocks from my Airbnb and invited me over. Easy, right? Well… not exactly. I followed Google Maps, got confused, walked in circles, questioned my entire sense of direction—but eventually, I made it.

We had a fantastic day—catching up on 30 years of friendship, reminiscing, and enjoying his incredible hospitality. He comes from one of the wealthiest families in Guatemala, so his home is not your average house. Think private security, hidden doors, and a size that makes Google Maps irrelevant.

At the end of the day, I got ready to leave, and my friend insisted on walking me home. “Come on,” I said, “I’ve done way scarier things in way sketchier places. I can handle two blocks!” He finally relented… or so I thought.

As I confidently headed for the door—ready to prove my point—I realized… I couldn’t find it. His house is so massive that I literally had to be escorted out. The irony wasn’t lost on either of us.

Still, I was determined to walk home alone. But my friend quietly assigned one of his security guards to accompany me.

We set off, and I proudly followed Google Maps… until we arrived at my Airbnb—except, it wasn’t. The key didn’t fit. The number didn’t match. We tried another block. Still nothing.

At this point, I just started joking with the security guy while desperately refreshing Google Maps. Eventually, I called my Airbnb host, who came to rescue me. When he arrived, he gave the security guy a puzzled look, probably wondering why on earth this guest needed a personal bodyguard just to get home.

I can navigate the world with ease… but apparently, not a simple two-block walk.

Anyone else directionally challenged? Or is it just me?
