Writing retreat in the French Alps

Write your book in one week: October 9 – 16th

In the south of Europe, in the middle of the famous ski area of Les Arcs, lies the mountain-hamlet ‘Les Granges’. Our authentic writers chalet offers comfort in the middle of nature, forest, silence, and with beautiful views of the mountains. The ideal place to write your book without distractions; whether your book is still in the early stages, you are already working on a manuscript, or it is almost finished.

We will be taken care of (or should I say spoiled?) by the Dutch chef Martijn van den Elzen and host Maartje, who have lived in the mountains for years and will show us the most beautiful places. In addition to the writing workshops and personal guidance you will get from me, there are also beautiful walks, meals prepared by our personal chef, and a massage to ensure optimal inspiration. A wonderful opportunity to get away from it all, to be completely cared for, to relax and tap into your inspiration.

A designer will create a first draft of your book cover. This will make your book really come to life, and it is THE moment to start your promotion and maybe even pre-sell you book. There is also a workshop with my publisher Jan-Willem Gerth about self-publishing, e-books, printing, distribution, etc. You can ask him anything about publishing your book, what a publisher pays attention to, who to approach, etc. In order words: No excuses to write and publish your book.

What results can you expect?

Whatever stage your book is at, whether it is just an idea or half-finished, you will return from the retreat with more insights and a much improved/expanded version. Check out examples, the daily program, and other general info for all writing retreats.

Excursions

Naturally, this week is all about writing. We follow a structured program to get the most out of our time together. Every morning I give a workshop on a theme that you can immediately put to use that day. Lunch is provided in the chalet or in the garden, so you can continue working undisturbed. If you need 1 on 1 guidance, it is always available.

Once a day we take a walk or mini-excursion, sometimes combined with lunch (picknick!) or dinner. This provides the ideal combination of maximum writing time and enjoying the surrounding Alps. The program and other general information that applies to all of my writing retreats can be found on the writing retreat page.

The first evening, during the welcome dinner, we’ll decide on the details of the program together. Below are some excursions and activities you can choose from:

  • A mountain or forest walk

  • A special ‘writers’ massage at the chalet. We will definitely do this one!

  • Dinner at boutique restaurant Le Petit Hibou. Every writers favorite excursion!

  • A yoga class with a view over the mountains

  • A wine tasting 🍷

  • A cooking workshop with fresh local products (you can also just eat, if you don’t feel like cooking…)

  • A magical night or evening walk through the forest

“A week of no distractions, being able to focus 100% on your book is really a gift for yourself.
With an inspiring club of international writers, private chef Martijn who conjured up the most beautiful local dishes for us twice a day, and the energetic guidance of Esther Jacobs, the completion of my book on authentic storytelling really got a boost…
Now I need to tie up the loose ends and then my manuscript can go on to the publisher, I already have the cover!”

but also introduced me to promotion, publishing, and much more.”

Travel info

The writing retreat in the French Alps takes place in the hamlet of Les Granges (near the famous ski resort of Les Arcs), part of the municipality of Bourg Saint Maurice, Savoie.

We will start on October 9th around 5 pm with a welcome drink and dinner. So make sure you are there on time. You can travel by car, train or plane. Below are all options.

By car
Travel time from Amsterdam to Les Granges (Bourg Saint Maurice) is approximately 10 hours, including stops. A good place to stay if you want to split the trip in two days is Novotel Nancy Laxou.

Fly to Lyon or Geneva
About two months in advance you will receive a flight schedule with the best flights. At the airport, you can rent a car: www.rentalcars.com. Both from Geneva and Lyon Airport, it is also about a two-hour drive to Les Granges.

If more people fly to the same airport and at least three want to share a transfer, we can arrange that for you. The transfer price is €95-130 return, depending on the number of people traveling.
