Write your back cover

From idea to book online workshop – Not available

This last page of your book is literally the most important page of your entire document. It is the first thing that your readers will see, it is the ‘blurb’ for getting sales (and a publisher) and it serves as a guide for structuring the content of your book.

Write just this one page. Even if the back cover is the only page you ever write; just give it a try. You will have something to show your friends, followers, (potential) readers, clients, and a publisher. Their feedback will help you to determine if it is worth actually writing the book.

This sure beats having to write the entire book first, right?

In my online workshop, I will guide you step by step through the content of a good back cover. Join to learn how to:

  • Fit your idea into 250 words
  • Find the right tone of voice
  • Write ‘about the author’
  • Get the most important page of your book just right
  • Use it to create an outline for your book

Many writers feel challenged to include all the essentials in the 250–300 words (the available space on the back cover). I will personally help you, also with the most difficult part: ‘About the author’, (because it is difficult to write about yourself).

Live and write in reverse

When the publisher of my first book asked me for the back cover text, just as I started writing the book, I was surprised. I had assumed the publisher would craft this description when the book was finished.

“Well, the author knows the topic of their book best, so we ask the author to write this ‘blurb’ and we edit it if necessary” he explained.

“But why would I write the back cover now, when I am nowhere near completing the book?” I wondered out loud.

“The tragedy of life is that you live it start to end, but you can only understand it in reverse. One way to at least overcome this when writing a book is using the reverse writing method that Esther explained during her workshop. You start with the back cover text and design. Next you begin promoting and selling the concept. Only then do you start writing. It’s kind of tragic that I only understand this now that my book Stress-free leadership is almost finished.”
