What does workation mean?<\/h2>\n

Working on vacation, or vacationing while working. ‘Workation’ is actually a combination of the words work<\/em> and vacation<\/em>. It is sometimes called remote working<\/a>. Remote work means not working in the office; so it can also be done at home. The meaning of a workation is that you are both away from the office and away from home. You can stay in your own country, but usually, a sunny country is preferred (Spain is very popular), so that work can be combined with swimming, surfing, and sightseeing. Some opt for a workation in the snow, so that they can work part of the day and ski or snowboard the rest of the day.<\/p>\n

What kind of workations exist?<\/h2>\n

You can move your daily work to a country or a place you always wanted to visit, you can dedicate<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

your workation to a specific project (e.g. write a book during a writing retreat<\/a>), you can learn a new skill (e.g. yoga or surfing), or you can go with a group of like-minded people (eg young internet entrepreneurs, or working mothers) to learn from each other and have fun together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

A workation is tax deductible!<\/h2>\n

Because it concerns a work trip, you can deduct part of your travel and accommodation from your taxes. As an entrepreneur, these are operating costs, as an employee, there is often also an allowance or compensation. How exactly does that work? Check the website of the tax authorities of the country where your company is registered or where you pay your personal taxes.<\/p>\n

Is there insurance for workations?<\/h2>\n

Regular travel insurance does not cover work activities. So if you have an accident or your laptop is stolen, your regular travel insurance won’t cover it if it turns out you were traveling for work. Because it is becoming a trend to go on workation, there are now also special workation insurance policies. Some organizations, like Knab, have recently started offering a special ‘workation insurance’ whereby not only normal travel matters such as air travel and car rental are insured, but also your laptop and your holiday activities next to your work.<\/p>\n

If you have never worked remotely from another place or country, it can be useful to join an organized workation. Then you know for sure that the internet is good, that the place where you stay has good workstations, and that you are among like-minded people. Don’t reinvent the wheel yourself, make sure you can concentrate on your work and also fully enjoy your free time.
