8 STEPS TO TURN YOUR PASSION INTO A BUSINESS

People often ask me: You seem to be doing only fun things: traveling the world, writing books, dancing tango, making olive oil in Puglia. How do you manage to turn those passions into a money-generating business?
The secret is: don’t think of it as a business. Do what you like and what you are good at and business will come to you.

Want to make money doing what you love? Follow these 8 steps:
1. Realize that your added value often lies very close to your passion
2. Find out what your clients need and how your offer meets that need
3. You don’t need any more diploma’s: work with what you have
4. Create a slogan that makes your service sound unique
5. Start talking about it, be visible, offer tips and advice
6. Stop listening to people who say what you want is not possible
7. Try things out. Start doing what you love, be out there!
8. Grow and learn

Entrepreneurship is learning by doing. We have no use for elaborate, ‘perfect’ plans that will never be executed.

My motto is ‘work with what you have and also ‘start now’. Now is the best time to find out what works and what doesn’t.

And often, you already have what it takes. You don’t need another diploma, you don’t need to win the lottery, and you don’t need to wait till X happens.

For example, when I want to organize a retreat, I post it on social media. Only when I have enough participants I start to actually organize the trip.

It may sound scary, but actually you have nothing to lose!

“I never thought I could write a book. I did realize that I have a lot of knowledge and experience about a specific niche: subscription models for product-based businesses. And that companies really need that right now. But I had no idea how to write a book, where to start, and most importantly: how to find the time. Esther triggered me with her ‘Reverse Writing’ method, I decided to give it a try and booked a writing retreat and another one a few months later. This was the only time I could free up to work on the book. 📖

Starting with the back cover was magical. It allowed me to test my book idea in the market. To my surprise, I immediately received a few hundred orders for the book. Now I HAD to write it! ✍🏼

The next surprising step was to have a cover designed. This really brought the book to life. The photo of me, the typewriter and my book was taken while I was still writing it. In fact, I had a completely different book in my hand: we just photoshopped the cover of my book on it…This way I could promote my book before it was ready. 📈

Then I had custom illustrations made, found a professional editor and a designer who created the inside of my book. In total it took about two years, but I finished it. Now I ordered a proof version from Amazon and am doing one last round of proofreading. It will be released in the next few weeks. And I’m so proud! 🍾

There is one additional result that I did not expect. By creating an outline for the book and defining the different themes, I unknowingly laid the foundation for my new company Black Winch, in which my team and I help companies kickstart or upgrade their ‘As-A-Service’ models. 🧑🏼‍💻

The book gives me authority, visibility, it brings leads and certainly also the confidence that there is a real need for advice in this specific niche market! 😄”

This week I am working from Mallorca, while helping 6 writers with their books. Next week I will be in Amsterdam, the week after in Italy.

These some some of the ‘office views’ I have had in the past months.

For me it is inspiring to be location independent and change environments often. Yes, it takes energy to move, but it provides me with a lot of inspiration for my books, my work, my coaching, my friendships, life in general.

📚Yesterday, at the start of my writing retreat in Mallorca, each writer shared why they want to write their book.

✨Each retreat I am surprised and humbled by the stories that surface. Touching life stories, powerful lessons, and great business ideas: the welcome meeting at the writer's villa is one of my favorite moments.

MINIMIZE TO THE MAX!

✈️I travel light. I can go for months at a time with only carry-on luggage. There is only so much you really need.

🧳I must admit that I have a storage in Amsterdam with one extra suitcase with winter and hiking clothes and maybe two boxes with other stuff. That is all I own!

🏄‍♀️Possessions don’t make me happy, it is EXPERIENCES that do. And the less possessions you have that ’tie you down’, either physically or emotionally, the more freedom you will feel.

Do you want to travel, live in a smaller apartment, rent out your house or minimize your possessions for another reason?

The following steps will create space, both physically and in your head:

1) Go paperless: scan all your photos and other papers and keep them in the cloud

2) Donate or sell most of your books/clothes

3) Put small trinkets in a box and see if you miss them (not!)

4) Digitize: take pictures of things that you keep purely for their emotional value (and only keep the picture)

5) Share: if you rarely use your car, roller skates, ski gear or tent: give them away and borrow/rent them when you need them.

7) Go through all your stuff one step at a time and consider if it's worth storing.

8) Don't do everything at once. Go through various cycles. Take your time.

🛖 When I bought my 200-year-old trullo, it was neglected and not fit to live in.

I cannot believe a family with three daughters used to live in this ONE room, with no water, electricity, bathroom or toilet.

🪚 Fortunately, times have changed. My handy neighbor Mario has restored the trullo in its splendor, and added some modern touches:

• Electricity and light has been installed ⚡️

• A wood stove has been put in the old fireplace to heat the place in a traditional and romantic way 🪵

• We used the old built in wall-supports for the bed, but I made it bigger (in the old days beds were only 1.80m long!) 🛏

• The old exterior kitchen has been transformed into a new, real room 🪄

• The floors haven been cemented, so there is a bit more isolation against cold and humidity ❄️

• The outside has been restored, cemented and painted. 🌈

For the rest the trullo remains the same.

🧱 I decided not to build a bathroom or bring water to the trullo. That will be in the new 'tiny house' that is being constructed next to it. I wanted to change as little as possible, to keep that authentic feel to the place.
